Cultivating a daily practice of gratitude is crucial for keeping life in perspective and staying aligned with the truly important things in our lives. It is good to feel grateful for everything we have and everything we have accomplished.
By looking for joy in my life right now, it helps me nurture a positive sense of fullness and accomplishment. Every day, I make a list of at least five things I say Thank you for.
What are you grateful for?
For years I have been listening to successful people telling me how they have their own gratitude journals. I was aware of the power of gratitude, but the practice was about applying gratitude to my daily life. It was about walking the talk.
The idea of filling a whole notebook with all the positive things that happen to us throughout the year is quite a concept. An exercise in maintaining our focus on ‘the glass half full’.
Such an attitude in life helps me stay in my own lane as opposed to looking over at what others are doing. Making a list of the things I am grateful for, teaches me not to worry about competition, about lagging behind.
Gratitude is a working tool
Gratitude is a working tool in my life and even if it did nothing else for me, it would still help keep me balanced and stable. It also helps me discover what I really enjoy and what feels good to me.
It also taught me that in order to be truly grateful, there must be an object the gratitude is focused on. There’s no such thing as being grateful in general.
One of the important lessons to learn is to say Thank you even for the things that are not so good. That is the hardest lesson to master, but a necessary one. Why practicing gratitude is so important is because it also helps you come to terms with acceptance.
Where’s there acceptance, there’s a learning curve that you can use to propel yourself forward.
If we try to treat all the challenges facing us as opportunities to be grateful for the lessons they teach us, we can grow as human beings.
